Days After a Win, Vaughn Taylor’s Head Is Still in the Clouds

LOS ANGELES — The last player standing at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Sunday was the first in his threesome to hit at the start of the Northern Trust Open on Thursday. Without fanfare, the starter announced, “From Augusta, Georgia, please welcome Vaughn Taylor.”

The stripped-down introduction suited Taylor, who showed up for the first round since the round that resurrected his career with his lightweight kickstand bag, wearing an unadorned pullover sweater. Four days after making five birdies on his last nine holes, including four in a row, for a final-round 65 at Pebble Beach, Taylor made three bogeys on his first nine at Riviera Country Club on his way to a two-over 73.
