As William Karlsson was piling up goals for the Vegas Golden Knights this season, Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen was more curious than upset.
“We’ve gone over this a million times, and there was no way we could have protected him,” Kekalainen said.
The Blue Jackets made Karlsson available in the expansion draft as part of an important trade that allowed Columbus to rid itself of David Clarkson’s $5.25 million cap hit. The Blue Jackets also gave up a first- and second-round draft pick. The Blue Jackets were thrilled at the time because they desperately needed the cap space. Plus, they were able to keep Josh Anderson and young goalie Joonas Korpisalo.
