Hurricane Scrambles Saturday’s Sports Schedule

MIAMI — Fear of the damage that Hurricane Matthew may cause in the United States prompted two college football postponements Thursday and had the N.F.L. plotting just-in-case possibilities for games scheduled in Tampa, Fla., and Miami this weekend.

Two college games set to be played Saturday — Louisiana State at No. 18 Florida, and Charlotte at Florida Atlantic — were postponed. The Tigers-Gators game scheduled for Gainesville is off indefinitely, and the Charlotte-F.A.U. game scheduled for Boca Raton is tentatively planned to be played Sunday.

Saturday night’s game that has No. 23 Florida State visiting No. 10 Miami remains on as scheduled, although officials remained cautious. The fate of Saturday’s game between Georgia and South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., also remained unclear, because the hurricane is expected to head that way after making landfall in Florida on Friday.
