A black sign hangs above the exit of the Mets’ clubhouse. In white lettering, it reads, “Do Your Thing.” Mets players wear blue and black T-shirts with the slogan “Has Tu Diligencia,” which carries a similar message in Spanish.
“I try to have positive energy, and I try to transmit it to everyone around me,” said Jose Reyes, a Mets infielder and the creator of the sign and the T-shirts that were handed out to his teammates and coaches.
They are the superficial indicators of the deep influence Reyes’s teammates say his presence has had on the team.
The Mets’ recent surge in the National League wild-card race has coincided with the returns of outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera from the disabled list. But Reyes’s personality and improved production have also played a significant role.
