M.L.B. Playoff Races: Dodgers Stretch Lead in N.L. West

The battle between Los Angeles and Colorado remains baseball’s closest race, but there is plenty of action in the N.L. Central, where the Cardinals are making a late run on the top wild-card spot.

With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, 12 teams entered Tuesday’s games within five games of the 10 playoff spots. The Boston Red Sox had a shot at clinching a division title with a win on Tuesday — they failed — while at the extreme other end of the group, the Arizona Diamondbacks were all but eliminated from contention for both the National League West and the wild-card.

The main action continued to be in Los Angeles, where the Dodgers are asserting control of the National League West as the Rockies grapple with how to survive an injury to the star shortstop Trevor Story.
