Late last summer, a month after a Fourth of July fireworks accident had seriously damaged his right hand, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and the Giants were at a strained standoff. With scant information about the condition of his hand and with no sense of what Pierre-Paul’s football future held because he would not contact the Giants, the team’s leaders routinely shook their heads in exasperation when asked about Pierre-Paul, the linchpin player of their defense.
Pierre-Paul, though inhibited by his still healing injury, eventually rejoined the team for the final half of the 2015 season. The reunion went better than the summer impasse would have presaged, as Pierre-Paul was genially welcomed back by management and his teammates.
