Vesey sweepstakes: Top six contenders to sign him

Former Harvard standout Jimmy Vesey becomes the NHL’s hottest free agent at midnight ET. A long line of teams will bid for his talent.

After putting up 144 points in 128 games in college, Vesey is considered to be NHL-ready. He was drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2012 draft and chose not to sign with them. Even after his rights were traded to Buffalo in June, Vesey has opted to delay his decision about where to sign until he becomes a free agent. Because there’s an entry level salary cap in place, he will cost the same wherever he goes. Most teams will be interested, but here are favorites and what they have to offer:

1. Boston Bruins:  How long have we heard the rumors that the Massachusetts native wanted to play in Boston?He spent four years at Harvard. Boston is part of who he is.

2. Toronto Maple Leafs: His father, Jim, scouts for the organization and his brother, Nolan, was drafted by it. The Maple Leafs are an up-and-coming team.

3.  Buffalo Sabres: Jack Eichel is one of Vesey’s friends, and the Sabres are collecting talented youngsters….
